The decision came nearly a year after an 11-year-old girl died in a tobogganing accident on the hill at Mooney’s Bay.“I am very disappointed to read this memo, sent to the corporation and Council as a whole, without first reviewing it with me, the local Councillor,” he wrote in a response to City Manager Steve Kanellakos and Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services general manager Dan Chenier.
“The tragedy at Mooney’s Bay last December 27 that took the life of 11-year old Josée Abi Assal was completely preventable,” he wrote. “Brockington noted in a phone call to CTV News that Abi Assal hit a post that city crews had forgotten to remove that winter. “I also accept that Mooney’s Bay Hill has risks around it that add to potential issues for sledders. Many of these can be addressed if a comprehensive plan is developed to permit sledding on one or some angles from the hill’s summit and not an absolute ban and closure. Mooney’s Bay Hill needs to remain open for public use in all four seasons,” he wrote.
Another point emphasizing the need to replace the totally incompetent & long list of failures under City Manager Steve Kanellakos' reign of failures? RiverWardRiley
And I want s new Tesla but the city won't do that either
Scrooge exists in every level of gouv. They also exist in unionized or not positions. They believe they are always right.
Let the kids play….
Oh Ffs, folks have been sliding down hills big and small for decades, either put your kids in a bubble inside or realize life is full of hazards and let them live.
When boomers ask me why my young kids are not play outside I will show them this.
Omg, a city councillor that has some common sense. We need more of these and less snowflakes.
Stop closing things down because of one tragic accident. Wrap the trees and post a caution sign. This hill has been around for over 50 years of winter fun.
I support shutting this hill down. But if people want to risk their lives or their children’s lives, then post a sign saying sled at your own risk. Any injury or death will not be the responsibility of the city or its tax payers. Lose another kid, too bad. Not our responsibility
Does closing the hill really protect the city from liability? How much is closing it and enforcing it going to cost? How much would it cost to make it safe to open? I suspect making the hill safer is not going to cost much more than shutting it, especially over the longer term.
don't let people start at the top, restrict, with bollards or fencing or something to shorten the hill to reduce the uncontrollable speed folks can get up to& pad all the trees and poles at the bottom when people die or get seriously injured something does have to be done
First, loss of young Josee is both tragic and heartbreaking and feel awful for her family's loss. But Chenier and staff are abdicating their responsibility for Ottawa residents and trying to hide behind fear of liability. Take steps to make hill safer. Chenier, do your job!!
