On Monday, members of the Economic and Development Services Committee voted to recommend the name ‘Debwewin Miikan’ to City Council for a final vote.
‘Debwewin’ is an Anishinaabemowin word meaning ‘truth,’ while ‘Miikan’ means ‘road’ in that same language. The street is believed to have been named after Sir Charles Bagot, a 19th-century British politician who served as Governor General in a pre-confederation Canada. Historians have noted that Bagot proposed policies that helped pave the way for Canada’s residential school system.
Council voted in 2021 to find a new name for the street – one that would be connected to local Indigenous history. The street is notable for being the location of the McLaughlin library., there are only three other properties with ‘Bagot Street’ in their addresses – a portion of Simcoe Street United Church and two commercial properties. Committee members voted to compensate property owners.
The city is expected to conduct an awareness campaign to explain the historical background and make sure the public understands spelling and pronunciation. Committee members also voted in favour of a traditional Indigenous renaming ceremony, which – according to the staff report – would likely happen later in the year.Ctrl+Enter
