Masstown farmer launches pumpkins over a kilometre for charity | SaltWireWhether or not organizers could actually pull off an outdoor NHL game amid -30 C temperatures and turn it into an annual event across the continent, only time was going to tell.

“We were fortunate in ’03, being the old guys, that played ahead of the real game and it was just a surreal feeling,” Lowe recalled. “Many of us hadn’t played an NHL game for a number of years. For me, it had been six or seven years, and had the feeling of stepping on the ice and hearing the crowd with the sensation of what football players feel when there’s 55,000 people watching the game.

“No one had done it before,” said Allan Watt, former Oilers marketing and communications vice-president, now with the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League. “And I still remember very distinctly, Cal Nichols and Patrick LaForge and myself saying, ‘Well, let’s just try it and see what happens.’

“But it was roaring away over there by the dressing-room door,” Watt recalled. “Yeah, we had a great idea and a whole bunch of expenses, but it all came together.”The temperature for Saturday’s outdoor game should reach a high of 2 C and a low of -9 C, which is veritably balmy compared to the first go-round.

While outdoor regular-season games might be old-hat now, there’s only ever one opportunity to make a first impression.
