This will be the twentieth edition of the awareness campaign, which reminds people of the dangers of ever-evolving fraud schemes.

The CAFC has noted that in 2023, it heard of around $554-million in fraud losses across the country. “Just a pebble in a pond,” said Armit, who noted only a fraction of fraud victims file a report. The second-most costly type of scam is called ‘spear phishing.’ Instead of casting a wide net and seeing who falls victim, a spear phishing scheme targets specific people or companies. The scammers could use publicly-accessible information to lure you in; they could impersonate a friend or a boss.

“We’re also seeing job scams jump up, especially with the declining economy and the challenge out there, economically,” he added. “These victims are being brought in to believe that they’re to help move money around for an organization while working from home.”
