What’s with all the dead animals in Beaches-East York? It may not be the question at the top of your mind, what with the cocktail of crises polluting the world at any given moment. But after reading the most recent edition of my colleague Matt Elliott’s City Hall Watcher newsletter, it’s the question at the top of mine.
If you live in the Beaches or East York and you called in a dead wildlife sighting to 311 in the early days of the pandemic only to discover days later the same fallen raccoon still baking in the sun, you’re not alone. One reason for this was, of course, pandemic constraints. “We had to put more processes in place to keep staff safe, so things can take longer because of those processes,” says Attard. And as in any sector staff fell ill with the virus — and, of course, still do.
But there’s another reason things got grim for Toronto’s raccoons two years ago. While our own outbreak was slowing city services down, an entirely different outbreak was slowing the raccoons down. In 2020, Toronto’s raccoons experienced an outbreak of canine distemper, a virus that according to the city’s website, doesn’t pose a threat to human health but can infect dogs that haven’t been vaccinated against it and raccoons who spread it to each other via secretion.
