The U.S. needs to be a key part of Canada’s next-gen jet procurement process GlobeDebate

A Lockheed Martin F-35 jet flies over its new operational base at Hill Air Force Base, in northern Utah, U.S.Elinor Sloan, professor of international relations in the department of political science at Carleton University, is a fellow at the Canadian Global Affairs Institute.

In 1997, Jean Chrétien’s Liberal government joined the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program, a U.S.-led initiative conceived as a new way for allies to work together to design, develop and produce a fifth-generation fighter aircraft. In 2006, Ottawa signed a formal memorandum of understanding that gave Canada and the other eight partner nations the exclusive right to compete for contracts to produce such aircraft and, since 2007, Canadian companies have won more than US$1.

According to letters released last week, though, the U.S. government threatened to pull the Lockheed Martin F-35 from consideration last year over Ottawa’s insistence that Canada receive industrial benefits from the winning bid.

But there is a way out of this morass: pursuing a back-to-basics focus on why we need this aircraft and what we need it to do.

New Canadian fighter jets will need U.S. certification: DNDThat is because whatever aircraft replaces Canada’s aging CF-18s will need to be able to tap into the U.S.’s most secure intelligence network to help protect North America through Norad Did we just buy some used German planes? U.S. Won't Defend Canada From Missile Attack Under Current Policy: General If Canadian citizens knew how much our Air Force depends on the US in theatre they would know it is laughable to consider buying anything but US made jets. Particularly now that air campaigns require elaborate electronic coordination. F-35s are purpose-built for that.

New Canadian fighter jets will need U.S. certification: DNDCanada's top military procurement official says the U.S. will have to sign off on whatever fighter jet this country purchases, but that he is not concerned about political interference. HarjitSajjan jamesbezan We should be seriously considering the new BoeingDefense F-15x with our NORAD responsibilities in mind. The aircraft will carry 24 air to air missiles. Half a dozen F-15xs could repel a massive airborne invasion over the pole. Twin engine/proven design Why do we have NORAD. The Soviet Union hasn't existed for a Generation. This union only helps USA.
