The sweet-swinging Olerud had his average over the magic mark as late as Aug. 2, when he entered a game at Yankee Stadium batting .402 and had one hit in four trips to drop to .400. An 0-for-3 the next day knocked him down to .397. He hit .295 the rest of the way.At age 35, Tony Fernández returned to Toronto for the 1998 season and showed he could still handle the bat, hitting .321 while splitting time between second and third base for a surprising 88-win club.
His average was sitting right at .400 after a 1-for-3 effort at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay on June 28, but that was the last time the late, great Jay reached those heights. An 0-for-3 against Baltimore the next day dropped him to .395 and he hit just .251 the rest of the way to finish at .328 — eighth in the batting race won by Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra , his first of two straight titles.
