Opinion: Toronto police were shocked after Robert Robin Cropearedwolf, wanted on a nationwide arrest warrant, strode into 52 Division on Tuesday of his own volition.

Robert Robin Cropearedwolf had been wanted on a nationwide arrest warrant for manslaughter since Feb. 3, in the death of long-time former CBC journalist Michael Finlay.

“Yeah, it kind of caught us off-guard, in a good way, that he actually made his way to 52 Division and surrendered himself. We had no idea that this guy was going to show up. He arrived unannounced, 100 per cent.” Absent a motive such as robbery, blame for haphazard eruptions of unpremeditated violence devolved in some incidents to the transient community and mentally ill homeless people.first circulated a photo of the suspect on Feb. 3

In earlier comments, police had described the suspect as having allegedly pushed Finlay in the “chance encounter,” then fled the scene. Finlay fell to the ground and suffered serious injuries. A long-time friend said Finlay, a cancer survivor, had been hospitalized with broken ribs. He was discharged but was later readmitted after his condition deteriorated., which is when police issued the manslaughter warrant and homicide took over the case. Finlay was Toronto’s fourth homicide of the year.

Browne says Cropearedwolf did indeed speak to counsel before arriving at the station but was alone when he surfaced at the station. Cropearedwolf appeared via video conference at College Park midday Tuesday.
