MONTREAL—Everything old is new again: that’s one of the first take-aways from this week’s opening Trudeau-Poilievre question period engagement.
While Pierre Poilievre’s calls on Trudeau to renounce any forthcoming tax hikes extend to employment insurance and pension plan levies, it is the carbon tax that remains his main target. Indeed, it is not only to cast a more prime ministerial presence that the Conservative leader shed his attack dog persona for his introductory week as leader in the House. He does not have a juicy bone to cut his leader’s teeth on.
The economy is not this prime minister’s strongest suit. His branding is more grounded in issues such as Indigenous reconciliation, climate change and social policy. And that means a significant part of the essential burden of projecting fiscal competence must be borne by the finance minister — in the manner that Paul Martin complemented Jean Chrétien’s skill set.
