Game Misconduct: Hockey’s Toxic Culture and How to Fix It.
I fear the necessary mindset shift required is further away from happening than it seems. Because in all the open letters and action plans Hockey Canada has disseminated in a last-ditch public-relations effort, it is still missing the most important point. We must stop thinking of hockey like a factory that treats hockey players like a resource meant to power a vast machine in search of a single desired output: winning.
There are too many areas of concern to list in one piece. And in order to change a culture, you have to clean the whole house. You need to remove all the furniture and reach into even the furthest corners, where the most dirt collects. That means more than just a one-off seminar. It needs to be hands-on, interactive, ongoing training targeted to all levels and age groups of hockey, be it players, coaches, general managers or equipment managers.with an organization like the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo is a good start, but how can we teach players to be active bystanders if coaches enforce a culture of silence in their locker rooms? As of now, a player still puts their career on the line if they speak up.
Every allegation needs to be transparent and documented to the public. Even the old ones. How Hockey Canada has handled every single one of those allegations.
icehockeystick I guess there's a low bar for calling oneself a 'Hockey Reporter'. Possibly the least interesting or insightful opinion in sports.
This is one of the best articles I've read on this subject. Well done. Great insight on what needs to be done to create a healthy culture right from when young kids enter the sport and then move up its ranks.
I don’t think people realize how expensive hockey is going to get for young kids if hockey Canada is dismantled.
icehockeystick 100% anyone on the board who created a fund to pay out settlements rather than address the root issue should be removed immediately. Culture starts at the top. And, there’s plenty of evidence for what changes culture—it ain’t just sending training videos and starting platitudes.
I work at HC and directly with the Board. Major changes are needed and a woman voice on the Board is key.
There is a much deeper conversation we should be happening around the context, sacrificing the organization isn’t the way to do it, changing behaviour is
It should be fully defunded by all levels of government - zero accountability and deplorable decision making by leaders that refuse to resign.
Hockey Canada should be gutted and rebuilt
The NHL must implement a mandatory policy of only Women of Colour on the first two lines.
Step one: stop playing hockey in summer.
It can’t change, it needs to be replaced
Agreed. Shut it down if it can’t right itself.
Lol… the destruction of all things Canadian continues under the most vile, incompetent and corrupt government in our history ….. but please continue!
