Remember high school biology? Plants absorb carbon from the atmosphere. As they expire and decay, microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi digest and sequester the carbon. By naturally adding organic material to the soil, microbes get fed and plants get nourished. For example, peas contain nitrogen; by growing, harvesting then rototilling their stems and stocks into the soil, nutrients are supplied for other crops.
