Ontario says gender identity, consent to be taught in new sex-ed curriculum in fall

The Ontario government says gender identity and consent will be taught as part of a new sexual-education curriculum that will be introduced to schools by the fall.

The province has released the broad lines of the new sex-education curriculum in an announcement that also lays out its plans for other aspects of the education sector, including class sizes and teacher hiring. The curriculum will replace an interim teaching plan based on 1998 materials that was put in place last year after the Progressive Conservatives repealed a 2015 curriculum from the previous Liberal government.The 2015 curriculum addressed consent, online bullying, sexting, same-sex relationships and gender identity.

The province previously held an online consultation on the issue and an overwhelming majority of those who weighed in through that forum in the first day opposed the decision to scrap the 2015 curriculum. The province says parents will still be able to opt out of having their kids exposed to certain topics in the sex-education class, and the ministry will issue online modules for those who want guidance on discussing those topics at home.

While we're on the subject of consent, how about just abolishing public education in the first place? Not to mention the taxes that pay for it

Wah wah wah..........I taught gr. 5 as principal relief, in the 80's and had 32 students, and had no say in the seating arrangements, as the dictator principal, a former Nun, ruled my 50% tenure. So, today's teachers need to 'SUCK IT UP, BUTTERCUPS', AND JUST DO YOUR $60K+ Job!!

Waiting until grade 8 to talk about gender identity is a mistake in my opinion. My son & almost all of the trans youth that I work with knew long before grade 8 and struggled to find ways of having family, classmates and others understand what was happening with them.

Imagine if art, math, and science got this much attention.... What would are children be like!

I don’t like the opt-out, and I wish they would have kept the most recent version for this year while they worked on this (my daughter got the 1998 version this year). BUT, I give the Ford government credit for bringing back these important parts of the curriculum.

Children NEED to be taught about the harmful chemicals/pesticides in our food chain and the consequences of eating these foods. Children can then educate their parents! Children need education on saving the environment!

Can we once and for all get gender identity / expression removed in its entirety from the curric? With nothing more behind it than pure make-believe, it has no business in public education. Legitimizing silliness is not preparing students for the world they are about to enter.

There are only 2 genders Male and female. You are a make if you were born a make and you are a female if you were born a female. Anything else us just not it idiotic but b.s .

Hopefully this garbage is removed at least.

Another fail by fordnation

Consent for sure but wtf is gender identity bullshit?

Consent of course but to teach the young that gender identity/expression is healthy is unbelievable. What next, anorexia and bulimia are also healthy because the sufferers feel/identify as obese. You had the opportunity to end this madness and blew it fordnation.

What was the point?

Because they were pressured to do so? Or because they wanted to include it?

I decided long again what I would and would not allow my children to be taught What other parents decide concerning their children is their business

the concept of 'consent' teaches kids to identify situations where someone might be behaving inappropriately with them. why wait until grade 8?
