The provincial government revised a March estimate that had projected the deficit to only be $20.5 billion.

Finance Minister Rod Phillips said the pandemic has created an"unprecedented health crisis" that required more spending.TORONTO — The COVID-19 pandemic continues to take a heavy toll on Ontario, the province’s finance minister said Wednesday as he announced the government has nearly doubled its deficit projection in just three months.

“We remain in uncertain times and the risk of a second wave is real despite our collective efforts to avert it,” he said. “The economic impacts of COVID-19 globally, and in Ontario, are still unfolding.” Among the new measures announced in Wednesday’s update, the province now plans to add $4.3 billion more to a health-care spending contingency fund in advance of a potential second wave of coronavirus cases this fall.

All tax deferrals the province had put in place earlier this year will be extended until to Oct. 1, which it estimates will cost $1.3 billion. “While the current level of government spending and deficits are not sustainable over the long term, they are necessary today,” he said. Ontario Premier Doug Ford makes an announcement with Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade at Clean Works Corp., in Beamsville, Ont. on Aug. 4, 2020.

Ford has said repeatedly since the start of the pandemic that the province would not hold back spending if it felt it could save lives. Now, he said, it’s about ensuring people clearly understand how the money is being spent.

Just imagine if the popcorn lady was still in charge Kathleen_Wynne Trump2020 MAGA This is a government that won't order mandatory masks Puts children and teachers on some weird experiment canceling social distancing for them While keeping it in place everywhere else Then refuses to take the elderly care out of for profit care leaving them in danger The Ford Government was always going to add to the deficit, Conservative Governments always do. Luckily for him he can at least blame it on the pandemic. Conservative Governments always make life harder and more expensive, there are no exceptions. None.
