Ontario proposes 2% raise for lower-paid education workers in 4-year deal

CUPE and other unions that represent education workers have said they are pressing for increases to both compensate for the wage restraint as well as to address the rising cost of living. Statistics Canada said the annual inflation rate in June was 8.

1 per cent.

Lmao

Maybe they should start teaching our kids, get a proper evaluation of their teaching skills first before any raise is dished out. The rest of us work our ass off and don't get raises like they do. Won't hurt then to work hard.

What about abworks ppl. We need more money, there is a crisis here ppl. The checks amounts are too low. Those amounts were for 20 years ago the prices of everything have gone up. This is reality.

Unskilled jobs pay more than educators make so 2% 😂😂 no where near Dougies 16,000 bonus

For those without basic calculator skills, here is the breakdown of 12% of a $30k net income. (Yes that's their pay) $3600 / year extra Which equals $163 dollar per pay check more based on 22 pay checks per year That's also an increase of $16/day Shame on anyone against this.

11.7% is ridiculous...no one is getting that kind of increase, even with inflation where it is

2%?! That's like a slap in the face.

Wait until they quit and get rehired as private teachers and cost the Province billions more than the 11.7 raise fordnation FordIsAFailure

11.7% increase….. who is paying for this? You are paid by the Tax Payers including yourselves? Where do you think the Government will get these monies? From the Tax Payers? Do teachers care for the students or for their own pockets? This is pure nonsense! Think again!

These people are teacher’s assistance and librarians and other support staff. They are vital to education. They don’t make nearly enough money. This proposal is insulting and irresponsible.

What is the salary increase going to be for Dougie Bee Ford and company this term? Bet it’s a bit more lucrative for the career politicians who just blah, blah, blah and contribute nothing to society.

Didn't Ford and his gang give themselves a 14% raise recently? I guess 2% is fair in their eyes. Time is up! General strike!

So basically in 4 years they only get $3,300 pay raise if they make $40k a year......ridiculous

Babysitting institution, they make already more than most of us and their pensions are best. I won’t not give up to their demands

For anyone supporting PierrePoilievre , please note this is an example of how PP cannot give you an inflation proof pay cheque. Education is provincial and wages negotiated by unions.

The more they make, the more the union makes in dues.

The article says CUPE is asking for an 11.7% annual wage increase. Please explain how a wage rate that increases by the same dollar amount each year can also increase by the same percentage each year? I don't think that is how math works, but let me know if I'm wrong.

More than I’m getting.

How can anyone say 2% raise is good, when inflation is 8%. That's like taking a 6% pay cut.

Middle ground for the CUPE workers? 3% would be good yearly. Teachers better not complain with 2%.

Hopefully this helps to keep good people in the classrooms for longer to guide the children on their school journeys, which is quite a nice experience in Canada.

2% of low pay eh

No where to go but up

11.7 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Anyone who doesn't think teachers deserve a healthy raise to meet cost of living should try educating a classroom of 25+ kids for 10 months, with no air conditioning.

An 8% raise over 4 years seems pretty good. Just imagine how much more they would make if they didn’t collect EI for 3 months over the summer. Ya know work the entire year not 9 months!

They should stop voting liberal in the federal election if they want to combat inflation.

1.5% for those who make over that threshold and reduction in sick time…This was a slap in the face to all from a Minister who wanted a “normal return” to school…Hypocrisy at its finest…..

It's still a pay cut, year after year. It will be like the nurses soon..... There will be none left!

Come on CBC. At least share the details.

1.25% over 4 years? Is the government crazy. That's an obscene insult. Strike immediately.

Who gets 11%? Must be nice

2% is the normal rate for more localized unions who don't have the ability to shut down the whole province.

THIS. IS. A. PAY. CUT. Give them their 11% increase to not only cover the 8% inflation we have this year, but to also make up lost ground from the government’s salary cap on public servants.

How much of a raise did he give his people? Much more than $16/week. What an insult.

They deserve the 11% annual raise. What they have to deal with for what they get paid now is an absolute joke

Starting point. Let the negotiations begin. Next will be the strike vote of the union members.

take it out of pension budget increase

Guess he wants to fight. Remember what happened to Mike Harris? Shame for MPPs getting 14% Ford gave 43 con MPPs a 12% raise in 2022. He justifies it by saying they work & deserve to be able to afford a vacation. Nurses, teachers get a 1% raise. Do they not work hard, do they not deserve a vacation. I think they do.
