The New Democrats say the promise would help relieve traffic on the provincially owned 400-series highways in southern Ontario by diverting truck traffic to the 407 Express Toll Route.
The promise is not included in the NDP's costed platform, but the party says it would pay for it by pursuing penalty fees from the company that owns the highway.
What a simple and almost free way to reduce costs of goods to consumers. This is the kind of problem solving we need in government.

I pay that little bit to avoid trucks and traffic. How does that help those that pay the tolls and do use it on a regular basis. I get mad when I have to follow snow plows in the winter on the 407 now I have to follow trucks all the time now? No thanks
Mixed feelings on this one I definitely don't think they should have to pay. On the other hand the 407 is incredibly safe in comparison to the 401 and I believe it's the lack of large transport trucks (I know most accidents involving trucks are the fault of other motorists)

This may prove problematic since the 407 is leased by subsidiaries of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, Cintra Global S.E. and SNC Lavalin. And, the lease doesn't expire until 2099.
