The ministry’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) program has started hiring crews in Ontario for this year’s forest fire season, beginning one month before the official start. However, veteran workers express concerns about their preparedness to defend communities from fires.

The ministry’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) program has begun hiring crews in Ontario for this year’s upcoming fight against forest fires – nearly one month before the season technically begins. In an email to SooToday, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson Sarah Fig said they hope this move helps “ensure we are prepared to respond should fires occur before the fire season begins” on April 1.

But as recruitment and retention issues remain atop the biggest concerns for OPSEU – the union which represents fire rangers – veteran workers within the program don’t feel they’re prepared to adequately defend communities from inevitable blazes. “It’s unheard of to start this early,” said Noah Freedman, a ninth-year forest fire crew leader. “I’ve talked to some older guys, and the earliest they had seen the fire season start was late-March. Getting called in that early is nuts.” In addition to his role as a crew leader, Freedman is also vice-president of OPSEU Local 70

Staff and Customers at 17-Mile Pub in Sooke Put Out FireStaff and customers at 17-Mile Pub in Sooke are being credited for putting out a fire that started at the popular restaurant. Owner Ken Whitaker says the flames were from a smoker fire, that started around 6:15 p.m. Tuesday night, and flames could be seen coming from a canopy, that was on an outdoor patio at the pub, located at 5126 Sooke Road. Whitaker says staff, and some customers, worked to put the blaze out, with a fire extinguisher hitting the flames early in the battle. By the time Sooke Fire arrived, the blaze was out, and firefighters did an assessment to make sure everything was safe. Whitaker said there isn’t much damage to the pub, as the flames didn’t actually get to the building. Eric Stepura, who took video of the fire, said the staff were heroic, not only getting people out safely, but then also battling the fire.
