Ontario is on the hook for over $6 billion in payments to public sector workers due to the government's unconstitutional wage restraint legislation. Unions have been awarded retroactive pay increases above the one percent limit set by the legislation.

Ontario is facing over $6 billion in payments to broader public sector workers due to the provincial government's unconstitutional wage restraint legislation . The legislation, known as Bill 124 , limited salary increases for these workers to one percent per year for three years. However, after the Court of Appeal for Ontario ruled it unconstitutional, the government repealed the law.

Unions with reopener clauses in their contracts have been seeking retroactive pay increases above the one percent limit, resulting in significant awards. Senior government officials confirm that the total amount awarded so far is $6,000,800,000
