Ontario announces rapid testing for schools in areas with high COVID-19 transmission, which will be used only for unvaccinated students with no symptoms who are not high-risk contacts of a case

The chief medical officer of health says it can helpand prevent transmission in schools for children that aren’t yet eligible to be vaccinated, as well as licensed child care centres.

Dr. Kieran Moore says the decision to implement the program will be up to local medical officers of health and parents will be able to choose if their children participate in the screening. The rapid tests will be used only for unvaccinated students with no symptoms who are not high-risk contacts of a case.

Moore has said widespread asymptomatic surveillance testing in schools isn’t recommended because it isn’t an effective tool. Our Morning Update and Evening Update newsletters are written by Globe editors, giving you a concise summary of the day’s most important headlines.

India to pay more than US$300 million to next of kin of COVID-19 victimsIndia's top court on Monday approved the government's decision to pay about US$670 for every coronavirus death in the country as compensation to the next of kin of the deceased. And who is going to make sure that the said amount is reaching the families and not the middygreedyweedy leeches? Based on the population and the number of deaths, that probably equates to 50.00 dollars per person. Shouldn't the communist Chinese who caused this pandemic be paying compensation?
