A year after the nomination deadline has passed for incumbent Liberal MPs, only 89 of 156 sitting members have met the conditions set by the party to reoffer themselves in the next election without going through messy nominations. Of those who so far have failed to hit the targets set by the party, nine are senior cabinet ministers and the national Liberal caucus chair, raising questions as to whether they plan to run next time.

“I’ve had a busy week meeting with constituents and laying the groundwork for the next campaign whenever the next election is called. I intend to meet all of the targets set forth by the Party.” According to a Liberal source, national party campaign co-chairs—Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Terry Duguid —told caucus colleagues that if they did not meet the conditions, they may have to face nomination challenges.
