Since its Feb. 26 introduction in the House of Commons, the Online Harms Act has received cautious, preliminary support from a broad range of law enforcement, civil society, and social justice groups that can at least agree on its stated intent to protect children and combat online hate speech.

Balgord said that while the current legislation takes a step towards providing greater access and agency to victims and their representatives within the criminal justice system and the Canadian Human Rights Act, he has several concerns about those provisions that he is worried may be overshadowed by the debate on the rest of the legislation.
