Singh previously voiced support for LNG Canada’s $40-billion natural gas export facility in northern B.C. and the pipeline that would feed it

OTTAWA — In an about-face coming a week after his party lost a Vancouver Island seat to the Green Party, federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he doesn’t support fracking and has concerns about a major liquefied natural gas project in British Columbia.

— Svend Robinson May 8, 2019Asked about LNG Canada, Singh told reporters that any resource development project must be in line with Canada’s climate-change goals, respect Indigenous rights and create jobs. “At this point, there’s some concerns that I’ve raised, and has not satisfied all those criteria,” he said.

While campaigning in Burnaby in February, Singh maintained his support for the project, citing the “exhaustive and pretty thorough consultation around Indigenous communities, First Nations communities and elected bands and chiefs.” The LNG question is a tricky one for the NDP, given that B.C.’s NDP government supports the LNG Canada project and the Coastal GasLink pipeline. However, Singh’s support for Premier John Horgan’s position may have helped federal Green Party candidate Paul Manly win Nanaimo—Ladysmith last week, doubling the size of that party’s caucus. In a news conference in Ottawa on Friday, Manly said fracking was a “wedge issue” in the byelection campaign.

“I’m confident that the leadership of the party will recognize that we were sent an important message in the byelection and that we’ve got to step up, and we’ve got to be bold,” he told the Vancouver Sun.

Why are politicians all so stupid?

Shocker

I'm not crazy about fracking either, but I always vote NDP...because the NDP is the only party that tries to help average people instead of corporations

NDP Pledges To Cut Canada’s Emissions Nearly In Half Over Next DecadeJagmeet Singh wants the prime minister to declare 'an environment and climate emergency” Unfortunately I think that third parties need to resort to flashy promises in order to receive media coverage, and thereby votes. Later when they need to backpedal away from lofty promises they get branded as liars, and people lose trust. It's a snake eating its own tail. Socialism tends to have that effect.
