“I've had people recognize what the scarf is, and I've had smiles and nods of recognition,” Potter said.Mohammed El Hazzouri, a consumer behaviour researcher at Dalhousie University, said that wearing a keffiyeh, “not too long ago, was highly controversial, and people could lose their jobs for showing that type of solidarity.”
University students have rallied around helping to promote solidarity with Palestinians by buying and wearing scarves and then reposting them on social media. Natalia Tola Maldonado, a freelance journalist and a proud wearer of the keffiyeh scarf, said, “visibility of solidarity shows that I carry the knowledge that people are suffering and dying every single day, every single hour, and it should be magnified at all levels.”
“Most organizations selling scarves donate a percentage of the sale, ensuring it is going back to relief in Palestine.”“My scarf was $45 and that went as a donation to the cause. I don’t want to stop wearing it even if a ceasefire is called. I intend on wearing it irrespective.”“Two weeks ago, we completely sold out of all our scarves ... most of our sales were made over December and January,” Al Ali said.
