Kyrie Irving dispelled rumours that he would retire over New York's vaccine mandate, while attempting to provide further context for his decision to be unvaccinated by insisting he was doing what was best for him.

won't play for the team until he is eligible to be a full participant, the sidelined NBA star dispelled rumours that he would retire over New York's vaccine mandate, while attempting to provide further context for his decision to be unvaccinated by insisting he was doing what was best for him.

The team decided, though, that the only way for Irving to be a member of the Nets this season is if he was a"full participant," able to partake in home games, away games and practices. In turn, he was jettisoned to the sidelines until his vaccination status changed. "I am doing what's best for me," Irving said on Wednesday."I know the consequences here and if it means that I'm judged and demonized for that, that's just what it is. That's the role I play, but I never wanted to give up my passion, my love, my dream just over this mandate."

Despite the wide-ranging nature of his Instagram Live comments, Irving did not explicitly detail why getting the COVID-19 vaccine wasn't the best choice for him. "Just use logic. You know, what would you do? You know, if you felt uncomfortable going into the season, when you were promised that you would have exemptions or that you didn't have to be forced to get the vaccine.

The pandemic, of course, was an issue long before the season started. The NBA season being derailed by Rudy Gobert's positive COVID-19 test in March of 2020 marked one of the first North America-wide moments of recognition that the virus' spread would tangibly change day-to-day life.

“What’s best for him” SELFISH. Plain and simple. Science proves it’s actually not “best” but we all know science wasn’t his strongest subject, thanks to Flat Earth. Grow up Kyrie

The problem with idiots is they never realize how dumb they are and the ego gets in the way. Just fall in line lol

“Best for him!” To hell with EVERYONE else. Goodbye and good riddance…he’ll come crawling back in 6 months or be on a respirator.

He needs to stand his ground and better not flip flop like the other guy from the Warriors :)

Pure 🩸 blood 💪

He needs to be jailed.

Kyrie Irving facing justified consequences isn't a moment to gloatThe NBA is a team game. That Kyrie Irving is facing consequences for not wanting to play really isn’t something to gloat about – even if it feels good for the moment. But after that? It mostly makes you sad. (michaelgrange) michaelgrange Do all Sportsnet writers have the same opinion? michaelgrange It is not about NBA or super star player, how one is willing to give up almost everything that he worked for his life. It is sad and disappointing michaelgrange Great decision to not let him play. These athletes are not above the game and need a reality check. Hopefully he’s not getting paid.

Kyrie Irving skips COVID-19 jab and benches himself - for nowHemmed in by a New York City COVID-19 vaccine mandate that covers pro athletes and would have limited Kyrie Irving to playing road games only, the Brooklyn Nets gave him an ultimatum: a.) get the shot or b.) take the 2021-22 season off. The media loves outing anyone who does not conform. If you had to pick an athlete to personify the anti-vax movement this seems about right. Great decision. He stood up for what he believed in. A feat only a few could do.
