“Two or three” geographic areas have already been identified for the pilot project, which is expected to launch in late fall, the project manager Claire O’Donnell told the city’s Transit Commission Thursday.Amilcar promised the on-demand service won’t detract from Para Transpo, even though it will initially use some of the same vehicles.
Edmonton’s on-demand service is the largest in Canada, said Barrhaven East Coun. Wilson Lo and it’s seen a 50 per cent rise in ridership since it started. While Edmonton’s service is offered by a private company, OC Transpo plans to offer on-demand rides in-house.Article content“There’s a lot more focus now on travelling within your community whereas before we only talked about getting from Barrhaven to downtown,” Lo said.
“Now, it’s ‘I want to get from my side of Barrhaven to the other side where the Costco is.’ But we just don’t have the level of demand to justify several corridors of transit like that. On-demand is a great way to fill that gap,” he said. “Every route will be different. It might fail in Barrhaven but succeed in Kanata. Or it might be the opposite. But we won’t know if we don’t try it. If we continue to run fixed routes every three hours where there’s only a few riders every three hours, well, that’s worse than trying something new.”
More details on the rollout of on-demand service will be revealed in the fall when OC Transpo unveils its business plan for the service.
