Gretzky thinks McDavid’s faced far more pressure than he did in his younger days. The legendary Oilers discuss that and much more in an 'epic conversation' with GQ Sports.

1. Gretzky thinks McDavid’s faced far more pressure than he did in his younger days

“… I was under a microscope, but I still had so many people saying, ‘Well we’re not sure. You know, he’s a good player but wait til he gets to the next level’ or ‘wait til he gets to junior hockey’ or ‘wait til he gets to pro hockey.’ So I had these doubters that really fuelled my fire, really pushed me to go to another level.

2. There’s a distinct difference between winning titles for a bigger city vs. a smaller one like Edmonton, and No. 99 would know “…So I think the biggest difference about winning in Edmonton versus bigger cities is that everybody, when you win, you’ve seen them every night, so you know that they’re as excited about it as you are, and they feel that they’ve done as much to win that Stanley Cup as you did as a player. So when you guys do win, and you will win a Stanley Cup, the feeling is just over the top. And you work your whole life to do that … When you actually lift the Cup, it’s pretty special.

Typical classy Gretzky! No one had more pressure in all of sports then the Great One during his early years. When he came to town Toronto would go nuts for tickets, much more then any other player

Because you had a better team.

Now he seems to be fully hitting his stride on and off the ice. (SportsnetSpec) Spec I think Hopkins has always been a true team player who is selfless and him having 3 other top picks to contend with a vie for the number 1 spot may have stifled him in his play or off the ice until Connor Mcdavid came and kind of just took the number 1 spot Spec Had it rough wtf are you talking Spec I like calling him THE NUGE. Oilers' Tippett laments team's lost progress amid season pause - Sportsnet.caTo finally have an Oilers team poised to make the playoffs and possibly even win a round or two, and then to lose out on that due to COVID-19 — while realizing where NHL hockey slots into the world order right now — it stings up here in the province that spring forgot.
