Sonja Gashus enters Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Dartmouth on Monday with Crown attorney Carla Ball to testify at ex-boyfriend William Michael Sandeson's trial on a charge of first-degree murder. - Steve BruceWilliam Michael Sandeson planned to carry out one last marijuana deal at his Halifax apartment on the night of Aug. 15, 2015, before getting out of the trafficking business, his former girlfriend testified Monday at his first-degree murder trial.

Gashus said Sandeson told her somebody had been beat up and he had used undiluted bleach to clean up blood on the kitchen floor. Sandeson and Gashus were arrested on the evening of Aug. 18, 2015, as they left a family dinner at her grandmother’s house on Leaman Drive in Dartmouth. She was released, but Sandeson was eventually charged with murdering Samson.

Sandeson was supposed to start classes at medical school that September. The Crown’s theory is that he killed Samson for the drugs so he could pay off a $78,000 debt he had amassed on a line of credit over the past two years. This is Sandeson’s second trial on the charge. The verdict from the first trial in 2017 was overturned by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal in 2020.

She said Sandeson instructed her not to tell anyone about the gun. She said the only other people he had told about it were his roommate and his neighbour across the hall.
