Team Nova Scotia guard Isaac Matheson drives against Dalhousie Tigers guard Malcolm Christie during a game at the Eastlink Classic at Saint Mary's in July. - David WinstonThat makes us the seventh-most populated province in Canada behind Ontario , Quebec , British Columbia , Alberta , Manitoba and Saskatchewan . On paper, that makes Nova Scotia a basketball David against Goliaths like Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Alberta.
"A mentor coach of mine, Bev Greenlaw, won a gold medal at the Canada Games in 1987 so Nova Scotia has had great players and a great history for more than 30 years," Havard said."They've also had years when they're down so it swings on a pendulum. We're a small province so we really need to have our best players playing at the best of their abilities when we get there to compete against those larger provinces.
To overcome some challenging odds against the nation's powerhouses, both coaches say the keys are to outsmart and outwork their opponents. Nova Scotia's players might not always be as big as their counterparts but that is out of their control. Playing hard and intelligently isn't. Both coaches also made a special point to explain why aggressive, full-court team defence has to be the foundation for any success, especially against the taller teams."We want to really play a fast-paced but controlled tempo and we really want to do it by committee," Tramble said."We have an array of players with different skillsets that can really have cohesion amongst the team. Most of all, we really need to get it done on the defensive end.
"The good thing is the balls don't change and the nets don't change. The reality is we can just lock in and focus in on what we do well. If we do that, I think we'll be OK.""It's the level of intensity and team defence and hard work that I'm focused on most," Havard said."We really have to push to be a much, much better defensive team and understand the work ethic it takes.
