Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, the director of the University of British Columbia's Residential School History and Dialogue Centre, has been appointed by the provincial government to investigate accusations that some B.C. emergency room staff played a game to guess the blood-alcohol levels of Indigenous patients.
"This is a Canada Day like no other Canada Day for some time," said Turpel-Lafond, who is also a law professor at the university.A recent poll of 1,000 people commissioned by Historica Canada found that Canadians have a lot to learn about the historical and cultural contributions of Indigenous Peoples and other Black, Asian and minority ethnic Canadians.
"It's a stat holiday so we'll take it, other than that there is no celebration in our community," he said. "What exactly is there to celebrate?" Wade Grant, an intergovernmental officer with the Musqueam Indian Band, said he would like to see a greater emphasis placed on days that honour Indigenous Peoples.
Chief Judith Wilson of the Neskonlith Indian Band said she views Canada Day as a chance to better educate others, explaining how she helped organize a skit depicting the writing of a letter in 1910 from Indigenous chiefs to Canada's seventh prime minister, Sir Wilfred Laurier.
Time to leave CANADA DAY as it is. A day to celebrate OUR country. This day, as far as I am concerned, includes EVERY CANADIAN CITIZEN. STOP MAKING IT ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE!!
June is indigenous month. Pick a day in there and celebrate however you want. It sounds like he's sitting there just waiting for someone to throw a parade for him. It doesn't work that way. Pride parades everywhere are organized by the LGBTQ community.
Being First Nations, I'm torn. While I believe it's a day to celebrate my heritage, I don't think it needs to be Can Day. I would like some recognition for it. Maybe a paid day off for all First Nations from their jobs. Maybe the provinces can throw a little party at a pavilion.
When you have clowns running the show expect to have a circus.
CTV cant let go of the grievance/victim mining.
This doesn’t reflect the opinion of the overwhelming majority of indigenous Canadians I know Then again most don’t have a “victim mentality” and the destructive attitudes that come with having one
I am offended
Understandable and yet I’ll celebrating just how amazing and blessed we are to be living in this wonderful nation of Canada...Despite the self loathing being peddled by the CBC and CTV etc.
Indigenous people aren’t saints, they enslaved their own and were murdious as well.. seriously try to embrace society at some level, if all you do is complain, and your situation never gets better... who is really to blame?
