On Wednesday, the league announced the list of players who have a chance to win the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. The trophy, which was first awarded to Hockey Hall of Famer Lanny McDonald in 1988, is given to the player who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to the community, and shows exemplary leadership qualities on and off the ice.
The winner receives a $25,000 donation that goes to benefitting a charity, or charities, of the victor’s choice. The winner is also able to elect that his team get a grant from the league to help organize a special activation related to his humanitarian cause, up to $20,000. Some of the notable nominees this season include brothers Jack Hughes and Norris Trophy candidate Quinn Hughes . Other big names include Auston Matthews , Marc-Andre Fleury , Cale Makar and Jack Eichel .
Of the 34 players to have won the trophy, 11 have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund was given the award last season. The Flames and Vancouver Canucks are tied for the most King Clancys, with players from the respective clubs having been given the trophy four times. Canucks legend Henrik Sedin is the only player to have won it twice.
Three teams have had players win the trophy in consecutive seasons. Boston Bruins stars Ray Bourque and Dave Poulin , Daniel and Henrik Sedin from the Canucks and former Minnesota Wild members Jason Zucker and Matthew Dumba represented their teams by being award the King Clancy.Anaheim Ducks: Cam Fowler
