O’Regan ‘thrilled’, Hutchings ‘excited’ about carbon tax

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Bernard Davis speaks with reporters at Confederation Building Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 22. -Juanita Mercer/The Telegram - Juanita MercerThere were contrasting emotions Tuesday as the feds announced they were imposing a carbon tax on Newfoundland and Labrador set to take effect July 1, 2023, which will drive up the price of home heating oil by 17.38 cents per litre.

The feds are framing the tax as a good thing. They say for eight in 10 Canadians, it will put more money back in their pockets than what the tax will cost them. The feds say they’ll do that in the form of rebates called Climate Action Incentive payments. For a family of four in this province, that will look like $328 quarterly, with the first payment going into people’s accounts in July 2023, then October 2023 and January 2024.

“The significant increase in heating costs over the last year already imposes considerable economic hardship and stress on these residents. A further 20 percent increase through carbon tax that, unlike inflation, can be avoided or postponed threatens to drive residents in the province into energy poverty,” Davis wrote.

“Time and funding are needed to transition residents that rely on home heating fuels to a cost effective and renewable home heating source. The province is making significant gains in this regard. We have significantly increased the funding and promotion of our oil to electric home heating program, which will see a 16 fold increase in home conversions this year, resulting in the switching of 1,600 homes to clean heating.
