But an expert warns there are significant complications for an officer with no RCMP training to join the national force

Locke, who campaigned on a promise to halt the transition to a municipal force and stick with the RCMP, said she wants the members of the Surrey Police Service to know she understands they are in an uncomfortable position.Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion delivered straight to your inbox at 7 a.m., Monday to Friday.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The RCMP trains recruits at that depot division, while in B.C., municipal police recruits get their training at the Justice Institute of B.C. On Tuesday, Surrey Police spokesperson Ian MacDonald said there are also issues of whether officers quit or retired and whether they want to go back, or could do so at the same seniority, rank and pay to former municipal jobs or at the RCMP.

In a written response, the RCMP said it will await any decisions that relate to the transition but remain open to all opportunities and would advance any staffing or hiring processes should it be necessary.Article content

Hoping is not a business plan .. Brenda Locke duped a few gullible voters to support her, but she has no say whatsoever about stopping the police force transition. The provincial govt BCNDP and they know, their base, the East Indian Sikhs, want the replacement to proceed quickly.

It’s undeniable that a local police has benefits. Will Brenda Locke focus on creating her own improvement initiatives for the city of Surrey rather than creating a conflict that harms the RCMP, Surrey Local Police, and public.

This is all political The NDP does not want to lose seats in Surrey If Locke and council work closely with the NDP and align themselves with current gov they’ll green light the switch back If the council aligns themselves with Falcon and the liberals the NDP will not support

Could they not keep both and have them working together? Sure surrey would benefit of having more police officers

I don't think many would want to work for the RCMP. BC RCMP has a 30% vacancy rate province-wide. The insular nature of the RCMP and toxic work culture would preclude promotion or advancement - 'If you didn't go through Depot you aren't really RCMP'

If they don’t fire them

kbolan I cannot understand the infatuation with the old boys from the RCMP. Surrey need progressive home grown solutions to it crime and poverty issues.

Q: Why would you interview Mr. Gordon to ask questions about the RCMP hiring process? He doesn’t know what he is talking about. It’s not complicated for an experienced police officer to get hired if they have a clean record. Why not ask an RCMP spokesperson these questions?

Why is the RCMP doing such a great job?

That's not a good idea.

Jack was pressured To go against when SPD was given permission to be formed they have had all the data all the financial reports but, they were determined to oppose anything and narrated against SPD

The board is set; the pieces are moving. There is no turning back! The mayor doesn't understand this. And it's not up to her!

It was Jack Hundel and Brenda Locke who spilled the dirty laundry of Rcmp surrey detachment how they are working with 35 officers in a shift for whole Surrey in our meetings. I Wittness to prove this .

This old folks club is everywhere who have nothing else to do. As Delta residents are pround of their work protecting schools and public with their presence. Our rental cops are letting gangsters roam around free tell us what's the progress for last 10 years .

They won't. After working for a municipal department it would be hard to go back to the RCMP.

They can't just switch to the RCMP that is why they should support them. Your talking two completely different organizations.

Oh Rob Gordon 🙄. The BCRCMP literally has an Experienced Officer Program with coordinators across LMD. please interview those actually informed.

Nope

The process to join the RCMP is a long and tedious process in order to ensure the highest standards possible. I do suspect that those who were hired by Surrey may not have been good candidates for the RCMP, they can only try though.

This transition should have never been given the green light in the first place. Time for it to stop. Also the comment of going to Depot to do training is incorrect. RCMP have already done experienced officer training locally.

This report will not be an easy one to produce given the complexities involved. There are several collective agreements, pension and rank implications, seniority complications, or the possibility that not everyone who left their former agency will be welcomed back.

The RCMP is hiring experienced officers just like every other police force. Mr Gordon is incorrect.
