Justice Michelle O\u0027Bonsawin said her background had helped shape her, but it was not central to her role as a judge

She told MPs she wanted to be a lawyer and a judge from the age of nine, but never thought she would reach the Supreme Court.

“I’m hoping that young people, female Indigenous women, will see that anything is possible if you set your mind to it and you surround yourself with great people,” she said ”I’ve stood on, as I said, the shoulders’ of giants throughout my life. They’ve helped propel me up. And I think that’s really made a difference.”Article content

O’Bonsawin declined to get into specific about several issues including how Indigenous law could be incorporated into Canadian law, citing the potential for them to come before the court.Article content O’Bonsawin will be the first Indigenous justice appointed to the court and Lametti said that was an important step for the country

Conservative MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay asked Lametti whether he considered the need for someone with the same amount of experience as Moldaver.
