Canadians appear to be slowly cutting back on their use of plastic straws and grocery bags ahead of a national ban on such items that will take effect next month, new statistics show.

The Canadian government is looking to curb domestic plastic pollution by the end of the decade as negotiations toward a formal plastics management treaty begin this week in Uruguay.

In a bid to cut down on all plastic waste, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised in 2019 that some single-use plastics would be banned by 2021. It took the government a year longer than it planned to figure out which items to ban and how to do it. The six single-use items the government is starting with meet two criteria: they are commonly found polluting nature, and they can be replaced by readily available alternatives that already exist.

Quebec residents used straws the least, with 16 per cent reporting using at least one per week in 2021, a number almost unchanged from 2019. In Quebec, more than two-thirds of people said they always used their own bags or bins to shop, up slightly from three in five people in 2019.

More perpetuation of the lie that our garbage somehow gets dumped into the rivers and oceans. Maybe in China and India, not in Canada.

Yeah because we are choosing our own straw type.🙄

Nothing like having a slurpee in my single use cup with my paper straw.

Love that the lead photo is LOADED with plastic that is still legal.... you cannot make this madness up. Listen... here's what they need to do.... BAN THE 500 ML Plastic bottle. Plastic cap, plastic wrapping. Millions are sold every day.... MILLIONS...

Im loading up on straws - have about ten years worth ready to go.

How does a plastic water bottle from Winnipeg end up on a New Brunswick beach?

Fake news.

Ugh. I'm so tired of ClimateCommunism

How can we use then when cities have already banned them? imagine saving the planet one paper straw at a time while jamming it into a plastic lid 🤡🌎

Imagine companies being so greedy and unethical as to argue there is no evidence these plastics are harmful. Imagine being so miserable and stupid as to think the media would concoct a story about it.

For many Canadians, Giving Tuesday is the most wonderful day of the holiday seasonIt’s the holiday trilogy\u003B Black Friday followed by Cyber Monday. And now Giving Tuesday, taking place Nov. 29. The three do officially kick off the season, but… what's the holiday ? Hey! Enough with the onslaught of special days. I'm still recovering from Sept 30 National Suck Up to Indians Day. I pictured sweat lodge with healing sweetgrass and had a large bottle of primo scotch. So leave me alone until Xmas.
