Community Living Ontario has set up a new opportunity for developmentally challenged students in Sudbury to meet new people to help them learn more about things they are specifically interested in.
She said part of the job is to meet with interested students and find out what their hobbies and interests are. Labby said there is a concern that too many developmentally challenged people are protected and cared for to the point they are not able to get out and meet new people. Labby said it is often just the student, their teachers, their mom and dad and a few family members, but outside of that there are few new things to influence them and challenge them.
She said mentors who are able to commit to spending a lot of time with the students are required to undergo a background check by police. So far, Labby has met with the four local school boards in the Sudbury district to define the program and to find students willing to get involved. "And what are they going to do? I don't know what they're going to do. It all kind of depends on what has been set up for them," said Labby.
