The initiative, which was co-led by the Toronto Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police and included police services across the GTA, has since wrapped up, but police say they remain committed to tackling auto theft. Johnson said that it’s a “complicated issue” and that there are a number of reasons why criminals commit car thefts, one being the “low risk, high payoff.”“The lack of potential consequences might be a driving factor as well.
