“Now that everybody is coming together and one voice turns into 10, turns into 100 turns into 1,000, I think we as people and players can use that as leverage.” 43_Kadri chats with rwesthead about how the NHL should publicly support player protests:

jolted the hockey world by raising his fist to protest police brutality and racial inequality before a home game, Colorado Avalanche centresaid the NHL should make a public statement supporting players who want to conduct political protests during the national anthems.

Kadri, whose family background is Lebanese, said the public outpouring of support and pressure presents an opportunity to hold leagues to account. Neither the NBA nor the NFL penalize player protests. However, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has gone unsigned for the past three seasons - since he sat during the national anthem and later took a knee to protest police brutality against people of colour. Kaepernick is now 32 and has not played in the NFL since 2016. He sued the NFL for collusion, settling his case in 2019. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“As protests in both the United States and Canada in recent days have focused attention upon racial justice for the Black community, the NHL stands with all those who are working to achieve a racially just society, and against all those who perpetuate and uphold racism, hatred, bigotry and violence,” the NHL wroteMaple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the Toronto Maple Leafs parent company, will support players who choose to protest before games, spokesman Dave Haggith said.

“My first year in junior, I was stereotyped and basically didn’t feel accepted by certain players or fans of certain teams,” he said. “It’s unfortunate, but I don’t want to go too specific into it.” “A lot of people said, ‘This is the wrong time, the wrong place to do it.’ Well, when is the right time, the right place?” Brown said., who is a close friend of Brown, said during the same group discussion that the lives of Brown and his children were threatened at the time.

NHL broadcaster won't mention GTHL on TV until reforms - TSN.caKevin Weekes, a broadcaster for the NHL Network, says he won’t reference the Greater Toronto Hockey League on television again until the amateur league begins disclosing statistics about how often players are penalized for making racial slurs. rwesthead KevinWeekes Maybe everyone should be made to attend anti racism seminars. Coaches, refs, parents, kids. Every year! Actually more than anti racism- bullying in general. If parents know precious Johnny will be suspended for the season they may take it seriously. Don’t attend=don’t play rwesthead KevinWeekes If a white kid says anything mean or remotely offensive you give him a season suspension. BarDown rwesthead KevinWeekes thank you for your leadership. Change begins at home, I am hoping that the nhl and NHLPA begin to make serious changes to hidden racism in this sport. I love hockey, but am finding it harder to support these leagues the more I read about the racial issues

NHL, Canadian government continue dialogue on hub city - TSN.caBill Daly said Monday the Canadian government is very aware of the NHL's timeline for a decision on the border quarantine issue and the dialogue between the two sides is continuing according to TSN's Ryan Rishaug. As someone who advises on all things COVID, it’s simplistic to say an exception under Federal Quarantine Act is the biggest hurdle. Provinces (especially Ontario) have developed Regs. and industry specific guidelines - hockey would be a fundamental contradiction to restrictions.. currently in place. In Ontario, allowing hockey would almost entirely undo the current Regs. on Essential Workplaces, which statutorily require business to follow all health officials recommendations and guidelines. Feds have no ability (currently) to supersede those fordnation Obviously Alberta is on board with putting its employees at risk (see complete inaction on occupational health and safety i.e. Cargill). I expect fordnation to be smarter than that. There should not be NHL in Ontario while this Pandemic continues. Period.
