Trump says he has become a ‘bigger fan’ of NATO, then attacks French President Macron as ‘nasty’

NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg speaks at the official outreach event in central London on Dec. 3, 2019.NATO secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg sought to build unity during remarks at a forum on the alliance’s future on Tuesday that preceded Wednesday’s formal meeting of the leaders of NATO’s 29 member states.

Mr. Trump’s remarks were surprise given the U.S. President has himself repeatedly questioned the ongoing relevance of the Cold War alliance, calling it “obsolete” during his 2016 campaign for the presidency. Mr. Trump has spent previous NATO summits hectoring his fellow leaders to spend more on their own militaries, complaining that the U.S. should not have to shoulder so much of the cost of defending Europe.

Turkish President Tayyip Recep Erdogan has also lashed out at Mr. Macron, saying last week that the French President had a “sick and shallow” understanding of the alliance, and vowing to tell Mr. Macron in London that “you should check whether you are brain-dead first.” The threat was roundly criticized by some attending the NATO forum in Central Hall, with delegates from Eastern Europe questioning why Mr. Erdogan would put their security at risk to achieve his political aim in Syria.
