The brainchild of pianist and educator Jennifer West, Müzewest was founded 10 years ago. Giving young artists a platform is central to the series, as is a strong focus on new Canadian music. The Müzewest motto is: “Quality performances at an affordable price.” It presents a mix of events and has a strong commitment to outreach that extends to school concerts and master classes.

But January is all about the madrigal. Simply put, the madrigal is one of the most illustrious genres of classical music, and the epitome of secular music for small vocal ensembles. It emerged in Renaissance Italy, then spread by the then-new medium of printed music: madrigal collections proved profitable for nascent music publishers and composers alike.

For The Annex concert, Müzewest offers up some 18 examples drawn from Italian and English madrigalists. The project’s name derives from the opening phrase of “Fyre! Fyre! my heart,” published by Thomas Morley in 1595.
