Viruses such as coronavirus have a high mutation rate. What implications does it have for vaccines, treatments and testing? — via healthing_ca

, directly target the virus itself. Remdesivir specifically targets the enzyme the virus needs to replicate., but the LSHTM study didn’t find many instances of these mutations. Wide use of the drug, however, will put selective pressure on the virus , so monitoring these mutations will be important. To diagnose a current infection, diagnostic tests look for certain genes from the virus. The accuracy of these tests depends on the target areas of the genome being as expected.

Similarly, once restrictions on international travel are relaxed, scientists will need to be wary of possible false negatives among imported cases of the disease. Like mutations in any organism, for a viral mutation to prevail, it must provide an evolutionary advantage. There is no evolutionary advantage to a virus if it kills its host, particularly if it kills the host before transmitting to a new one. But evoking symptoms in the infected person, such as coughing and sneezing, can help the virus transmit to a new host and this does offer an evolutionary advantage.

healthing_ca Must listen

healthing_ca Hang on a sec here! Influenza mutates fast. We have no research to date confirming the Corona Virus has a high mutation rate. This is a new virus. If SARS had been a quick mutator we would never have been able to contain it. I call Fake News!

healthing_ca Worldwide mortality is less than 1%. More than 95% of people recover. Why do you keep fear mongering?

healthing_ca This virus does NOT have a high mutation rate. MERS and SARS1 didn't either. Other coronaviruses, yes, but no affect on humans. Doesn't mean it can't, but VERY SCARY to think about a fast mutating species of SARS-CoV-2. But also hard to believe anything in the Age of Spin!

healthing_ca Same as other viruses. This is why the flu vaccine is notoriously ineffective. Viruses change.

healthing_ca CV19 is mutating slower than flu

healthing_ca It means certain death for everyone if we don't unquestioningly obey the commands of a graphic designer and a WHO/China stooge.

healthing_ca I’m guessing it means we should be scared shitless and become obedient when told how to act by the media?

healthing_ca So nice to finally see the National Post treat science as more important than political messaging during this pandemic. You might want to have a word with your opinion writers!
