“Nobody can claim that they, with a five-hour video and reading some stuff, then suddenly you’re culturally competent,” Song said in an interview with the National Post last week. “So we believe that this type of approach of mandatory program or mandatory education imposed by the law society is not in the public interest.”
In her view, the training was important because many people currently practising wouldn’t have learned about residential schools. The vast majority of lawyers have already completed the training. I don’t understand why any lawyer would not want to have the course. No one has argued that Indigenous training is not valuable. The point is that the Law Society should not dictate that lawyers must take cultural or political courses to maintain their licence. What would be next? When they break the law, what does it matter if you know their culture. It’s usually a culture of criminality, maybe it’s the indigenous that need to understand our laws.
