As Canada saw a rise in the number of jobseekers, employers collectively shed 2,200 jobs in March, according to StatCan.Youth aged 15-24 bore the brunt of the contraction, with 28,000 jobs lost in March. The unemployment rate among the demographic rose to 12.6 per cent, which was the highest since September 2016 outside of the 2020-21 pandemic years.
StatCan said in its latest report that overall the number of Canadians receiving EI remained largely unchanged in February. “In general, variations in the number of EI beneficiaries can reflect changes in the circumstances of different groups, including those becoming beneficiaries, those going back to work, those exhausting their regular benefits, and those no longer receiving benefits for other reasons,” the agency explained.
