Union Gospel Mission served Christmas dinner in its East Hastings dining hall on Saturday for the first time since the start of the COVID\u002D19 pandemic two years ago.

Two hundred volunteers and nearly 50 staff served about 3,000 meals to members of the Downtown Eastside community. “Community is a key thing,” Oakley said of UGM’s Christmas dinner. He pointed out how easily loneliness and isolation can overwhelm people who have to live on the street.“Once people come through the door here, there seems to be a sense of all that disappearing, and things start to relax, and community can once again be a part of their life, right?”
