Casey McDonald adds a tree to the delivery pile at Harrington's Christmas tree lot in Halifax on Friday. - Ryan Taplin / The Chronicle HeraldChris Harrington and his dad started their Christmas tree business 26 years ago, and they’re both still there all the time, but these days his dad limits himself to taking money from customers and referring media inquiries to Chris.
“We’re from the community, my father owned a business here, Harrington Brothers Volkswagen, for years, with my uncle,” Chris said on Friday afternoon. “We have quite a bit of property down in Digby County, and my dad and my uncle, about 30 years ago, planted some Christmas trees in a field. They didn’t know what they were going to do with them, and I came along and decided we should take care of them and grow and sell them in the city.
“The family property is almost 400 acres, between my dad’s property and my uncle’s, and we have about 20 acres of Christmas trees there,” said Harrington, who doesn’t talk about how many trees he sells, except to say it’s “a lot.” If pressed, he’ll agree it’s “a fair bit.” “Balsam fir is our number one seller, it’s 90 or 95 per cent of what we sell,” said Harrington. “We have Scotch and white pine, that would be our two varieties of pine. They are hard to decorate, and it’s not something that people just try for a year, its their tradition, it’s what they always get. One out of 25 trees might be a pine tree.”
