While only 15 of the women’s top 20 players are competing in Japan, 18 of the top 20 will be in Montreal. The draw will include 2019 National Bank and U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, who opted out of playing in the Olympics.
Lapierre says the Olympics were less of a draw because of the absence of money awards, a difficult travel schedule that called for players to go from the busy European summer schedule to Asia before returning for a series of North American tournaments, the fact that mingling with fellow athletes and sightseeing is restricted, along with fear on contracting COVID-19 in Japan.
“All things considered, having 15 of the top 20 women isn’t so bad. But let’s hope for 100 per cent participation in Paris in 2024, because the Olympics will always be a tremendous opportunity to showcase our sport on the world stage,” he said. “It really highlights the fact that the WTA players have a natural appreciation for Montreal. Having 18 of the top 20 is a vivid demonstration of that. Every healthy player plans to compete.
