The Australian band is set to perform at Vancouver\u0027s Malkin Bowl on June 1.

“The time has come, a fact’s a fact, it belongs to them, let’s give it back,” sang Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett in the veteran Australian rock band’s 1987 breakout song, Beds Are Burning, about aboriginal land rights.

“The institutional abuses are the things which have left obviously the longest legacy and been the most destructive for First Nations people. I think the most that can be said about it is that we know about it now, and we know that we have to make amends. It’s disgusting now when you think about religious institutions treating people in that way. We certainly had a similar situation.

Q. What did you make of the Australian government’s response to COVID-19 given live music was one of the last things to come back? A. It’s always a rocky occasion for anybody because of the nature of politics in the modern age. And the nature of the media. But throughout all of that and coming out the other end of it, and having served for two terms as a cabinet minister , being involved in the affairs of the country, I was really pleased that I was able to do it. And at the same time, to liberate myself from the expectations and responsiblities, if you like, of mastering politics and coming back and shaking it up on stage.
