As an ethicist, I have closely followed the story of Jody Wilson-Raybould and SNC-Lavalin. I found in the story two inter-connected narratives: One is the narrative of truth-telling and truth-spinning. The truth-telling narrative is rooted in a second narrative — problem solving versus boundary respecting.
However, I listened to her words as a truth-seeker who asks for evidence and questions stories. Over several weeks, I noted the evasiveness and shifting narratives spun by the prime minister and his colleagues. As an experienced lawyer, Wilson-Raybould provided detailed and clear evidence that, to me, seemed to point to the veracity of her claims of being unethically, but not illegally, pressured to cross boundaries of appropriate behaviour for an attorney general.
Wilson-Raybould was asked repeatedly to unlock the door. For example, it was argued that a retired judge could be found who could rationalize ordering a deferred prosecution agreement. What ensued was essentially a full-court press to get her to comply. When she didn’t, she was removed from her position as justice minister and attorney general.
To problem solvers, her behaviour may seem to be quite obtuse. Problem solvers are in their positions to get the job done, effectively and efficiently. If they are unsuccessful, then they are replaced. And here is where the narratives come together. Part of problem solving is convincing your target audience — the public, shareholders or a boss — that you are doing a great job.
Her “truth” is that she brought zero measurable justice on the SNCLavalin file after the DPP and PPSC have been working on it for almost 8 years. A DPA would have put this to bed faster, cheaper and brought measurable justice.
Who cares, next. We have a country full of families living below the poverty line. We have wealthy foreigners laundering billions through our real estate. We have families that have to choose between eating and paying hydro bills. Wilson can another job or join another party.
Is no one concerned with a Justice Minister/A.G. who calls herself 'a truth-teller in accordance with the laws & traditions of our Big House'? What if it was in accordance with Scientology? cdnpoli SNCLavalinScandal
