Mexico ends diplomatic ties with Ecuador after police break into its embassy in Quito

Mexico cut diplomatic ties with Ecuador after law enforcement entered the Mexican Embassy Friday and arrested the former Ecuador ian vice president who had been living on the premises since late last year.

QUITO/MEXICO CITY -Ecuadorean authorities arrested former Vice President Jorge Glas on Friday evening, seizing him from the Mexican embassy and prompting Mexico to suspend bilateral relations. Glas, 54, convicted twice of corruption, had been holed up in the embassy in Quito since seeking political asylum in December, a request Mexico granted earlier on Friday.

Tens of thousands of people staged a rally in Budapest on Saturday in support of a critic of Prime Minister Viktor Orban as he outlined plans to challenge the nationalist leader. The protest against Orban’s government was called by lawyer and former insider Peter Magyar, who has shot to prominence in Hungarian politics over a child abuse scandal.

A top military commander Saturday renewed Iran's promise to retaliate after an airstrike earlier this week widely blamed on Israel destroyed Iran’s consulate in Syria, killing 12 people, including two elite Iranian generals. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s joint chief of staff, told mourners gathered for the funeral of Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahdi that Iran will decide when and how to stage an “operation” to take revenge.
