Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman opts out of 2020 season - Sportsnet.ca

The right-hander said the novel coronavirus outbreaks that hit the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals and the spike in COVID-19 cases across the United States were major factors in his decision.

Stroman says outbreaks on Cardinals/Marlins, concern about playing in Miami, seeing COVID numbers spike across the country factored into the decision.Stroman had been sidelined with a torn calf muscle to start the 2020 season, but claims the injury did not contribute to his choice to sit out the campaign.

The 29-year-old joined the Mets ahead of the 2019 trade deadline after spending the first five and a half seasons of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays. He made a combined 32 starts between the two organizations last year, earning his first all-star selection with a 3.22 ERA.
