Metrolinx says they’re going to “restrict” e-bikes with non-certified batteries starting April 9. A spokesperson says only e-bikes with batteries that meet recognized safety standards will be allowed on trains following a policy review . It comes after Toronto fire officials sounded the alarm about the number of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries last year.
A fire on a TTC subway car on New Year’s Eve was caused by a lithium-ion battery on an e-bike, according to Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg. He added faulty batteries are behind a rising number of fires throughout the city. There were 29 of those types of fires in 2022 while last year, that number jumped to 55
