Metrolinx considering significant expansion of paid parking at GO stations

Citing “internal documents,” the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday that tens of thousands of free spots could become paid parking at GO Transit’s commuter lots if Metrolinx, the provincial agency which operates GO Transit, moves forward with a “parking modernization” program.

“Our study continues along with piloting solutions and working with municipalities to support customers to get to stations other ways such as local transit, biking, walking, ride-sharing and car-pooling.”

This is why I don't bother working in the city anymore. Besides money, it also takes a lot of time to get to downtown as well. You can easily spend a good 2 hours just getting to work then another 2 hours to get home after work. It's not worth it in the end.

Making parking paid would just increase the amount of traffic that will be in downtown and just the amount of gas that will pollute the air if all of these people start driving downtown everyday.

Just make more highways. There’s no point in driving when you need to spend like $50 per day fordnation

That’s just a stupid idea from Ajax to Union alone could cost nearly $10 per trip 😑 The pay parking is a terrible idea they don’t need another five dollars extra or however much you’re planning to charge on that at this point some people are better off just driving

“Not good for the taxpayer to expand parking” ? How is making the parking, paid, any different?

Local transit aka YRT is non existent and doesnt serve many of its station. Gormley GO is an example. Also build multi level parking structure will create more parking

Metrolinx GOtransit terrible decision. It already costs more than it should & you want to charge your customers more? What is the extra value that equates with charging for parking in lots that already don’t have enough spots? How about enforcing fares instead?

There’s no alternative but driving from GO stations to home.

Well, that will sure motivate more people to take public transit. 🙄 They do realize that we're still paying for our cars when we take the train? Those extra costs will factor into whether it's more cost efficient to drive or train in. At some point we just say 'F it' and drive.

What is there to consider? Expand them ASAP!

Even less reason to take the train now.

I quit commuting downtown after getting sick of paying increasing fares every year with poor services.

Here we go first fare increase every year and now parking coming. How about better service timing and connections to core Metrolinx
